Aboard ship or in a suitable engine room simulator, given appropriate alarms.

Performance requirement

Behavior Standard
The student will: During assessment, the student shall, at a minimum:

Monitor the propulsion plant

Respond to all alarms including:

  • coolant temperatures
  • oil pressures
  • tank levels
  • vibration
  • engine shutdown/slowdown
  • bearing temperature
  • exhaust temperature
  • oil mist detector
  • etc

For each alarm that occurs:

  • acknowledge the alarm
  • confirm alarm condition
  • assess cause of alarm condition
  • take corrective action

Assessed in EN‑4231 Sea Term IV: Marine Engineering.
